A Glasgow kids’ choir has released a Christmas cover and festive video on YouTube this week.

The G5 Kids Choir, consisting of Blackfriars and St Francis Primary Schools children, is a group within the Givin' it Laldie music charity.

The Gorbals charity, set up over a decade ago, offers free music tuition and choir lessons for kids, guitar and singing groups for adults, and singing sessions with individuals in sheltered accommodation.

Now as part of the charity's mission to enhance community between the two Southside primary schools, the kids have covered an "interesting" Christmas tune as part of the season's festivities.

The primary five to seven pupils created their own version of Vulfpeck's festive tune, Christmas in LA, which they called Christmas in G5.

They performed the tune at the Light up the Gorbals event earlier this month and created a YouTube video of the song.

Marix Leahy, youth music co-ordinator at Givin' it Laldie, said: "After having so much of the choir take place online during lockdown, we decided we wanted to do something that would get these young people seen in the world and on a platform.

"We decided to try making videos and putting them on YouTube which the kids are very excited about.

"There is also a New York kids choir called PS22, they're just amazing and we're so inspired by what they do, that we have tried to emulate that with this."

The YouTube video was done as a live-one take performance.

Marix said: "The kids did amazingly well and had so much fun.

"We're so proud of these young people and so proud to work with them.

"When we give them these opportunities, they always hit the mark. They're starting to step into their abilities, and we just want to continue to encourage what is already there."

The YouTube video has been viewed over 900 times and has gained over 100 likes.

The video even gained the attention of Nicole Sturgeon, who retweeted the video, saying: "Well done and happy Christmas to the very talented Givin it Laldie G5 Kid’s Choir for this brilliant Vulfpeck cover."

Marix added that if people want to watch the video, feel free to like and subscribe to the channel as "the kids are watching."

She continued by stating that the kids are "very excited" by all the likes and views of their festive video.

"I always say if these are the kids we need to rely on in the future, we'll be in safe hands."
