You can't beat a good chippy and we think Glasgow has some of the best.

We know this because we like to put to the test what the city has to offer in our Times Takeaway Review.

So today on National Fish and Chip day we celebrate Glasgow chippies by sharing some of our previous reviews.

Do you agree with our opinions? Let us know in the comments.

Glasgow Times:

Hooked, Mount Florida

"Hooked is popular in the South Side because they offer things you don't get in most traditional chippies," said our reviewer.

"Your food is cooked in rapeseed oil and as you order it. Some of the highlights on their menu include mac and cheese balls, fish pakora, and even veggie haggis," she added.

Glasgow Times:

Catch, West End

Our reviewer was a little disappointed with the Catch West End offering. She described the fish as a little on the dry side but admitted the chips were delicious.

Glasgow Times:

Gennaro's, Anniesland

Gennaro's will be familiar to those that live in Anniesland. We previously described their batter as crispy, roll as fresh and the chips were just right. Granted we got a sausage supper but that choice is still an important part of the chippy experience.

Glasgow Times:

Codfather, Maryhill

This has to be the best name for a chippy in Glasgow, right?

Our reviewer said: "The chips are just as they should be, thick, very potato-ey, not too done and plentiful (there were far more than in the picture) and there is a very generous portion of mushy peas."

Glasgow Times:

Salt and Vinegar, Shawlands

"If anyone orders a chippy and doesn’t get some fritters on top, they’re not to be trusted," this is the rule one of our reviewers lives by. Who can blame him?

He added: "If you’re after a takeaway but want to feel good about yourself, Salt and Vinegar is for you."

Glasgow Times:

Marini's, Mount Florida

"A familiar sight for football fans and gig goers attending concerts at the national stadium, the Cathcart Road chippy is always mobbed when Hampden opens its doors for an event. That perhaps is only a good sign," said our reviewer.

Although the order was pizza - another popular chippy choice - our reviewer said she would go back to Marini's to put their fish to the test.

Glasgow Times:

Benny's Fish and Chicken Bar, Dennistoun

"Benny’s massively impressed me. For a significantly lower price than my usual seaside chippy haunts, there was minimal difference in quality," said our reviewer.

Glasgow Times:

Romy's, Bearsden

Just outside the city boundary, we reviewed Romy's.

Our reviewer said: "The fish is crisp and flavoursome and still pleasantly hot and the chips are moreish and I don’t feel like I’m set for an evening of indigestion either, which is often the conclusion to take-aways for me."
